DISASTER/EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT (DEM)

Disaster Management (or Emergency Management) is the creation of plans through which communities reduce vulnerability to hazzard and cope with disasters. Disaster management does not avert or eliminate the threat; instead, it focuses on creating plans to decrease the effect of disasters. Failure to create a plan could lead to mergency management plans. Events covered by disaster management include acts of terrorism, industrials industrial sabotage, fire, natural disasters (such as earthquakes, hurricanes, etc.), public disorder, industrial accidents, and communication failures. Harbel College is the learning institution offering a degree program in this field of study.



What do Graduates of Disaster/Emergency Management Do?

Professional emergency managers can focus on government and community preparedness, or private business preparedness. Training is provided by local, state, federal and private organizations and ranges from public information and media relations to high-level incident command and tactical skills. In the past, the field of emergency management has been populated mostly by people with a military or first responder background. Currently, the field has become more diverse, with many managers coming from a variety of backgrounds other than the military or first responder fields. There are also professional organizations for emergency managers, such as the National Emergency Management Association in the United States of America and the International Association of Emergency Managers.

Where do Disaster/Emergency Management Graduates Work?

Numerous career opportunities are available to those graduating with an emergency management major. Positions are available at all levels of government including city and county. A wide variety of local, national, and international voluntary organizations routinely hire people trained in emergency management, and there is increasing emphasis on hiring emergency managers in the private, business sector. Graduates will find employment as a regional emergency planner with the Liberia National Red Cross Society, Expatriate for the International Committee of Red Cross of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent, hospital emergency manager, and emergency manager with the National Fire Service or the army, disaster insurance adjuster, hazard/risk manager specialist with factories like Cemenco, Duraplast, Monrovia Breweries etc. and academic associate for an emergency management program.

Disaster and Emergency Management is emerging globally as a full-fledged academic discipline. It refers to the management of both the risks and the consequences of disasters. The program produce specialists to meet with the ever-dynamic challenges posed by disasters. The recent Ebola outbreaks speak volume. Disaster and Emergency Management will find themselves highly employable, with career prospects all over the world. Disaster Management specialists are a necessity in every country, as disaster can and does strike at any moment. For these reasons, the demand for people professionally trained in the management of disasters is very high, making for growing opportunities for employment in the field of Disaster and Humanitarian Assistance Management

Once Core course requirements the National Commission on Higher Education (52 credits) and Harbel College common courses (18 credits) have been met, students then complete the major (68 credits) by specializing in the area where the degree is sought:
